WALES 0 ENGLAND 1 – 1974 World Cup Qualifier – Ninian Park, Cardiff – 15th November 1972

Sir Alf Ramsey’s side started his make or break World Cup Qualifying campaign with the expected win over Wales in Cardiff. His rebuilding job continued with debuts for Liverpool pair, Ray Clemence and Kevin Keegan. Peter Storey dropped into the right back position, with Norman Hunter taking on the midfield enforcing role. Sir Alf persisted with Rodney Marsh up front, pairing him with Martin Chivers.

The game was covered by ITV with highlights on the night of the game, but I have been unable to dig up any footage of the clash. The winning goal came from Colin Bell, although Kevin Keegan missed a glorious late chance, denied by a scrambling save by Gary Sprake. The sides would meet again in two months’ time, a match which would prove pivotal in the qualifying campaign.
