The Home International Tournament came at a difficult time for the home nations. With the European Club competitions reaching their climax, which featured Leeds and Liverpool, and with England facing a summer tour of Eastern Europe including the vital World Cup qualifier against Poland, England in particular were forced to experiment at times in the competition.
It also saw Northern Ireland forced to play all their games on the mainland, with the Troubles back at home making it unsafe for the other nations to travel to Belfast. They were the home side in the opening encounter which took place at Goodison Park.
Coverage was carried by both channels, with ITV showing over an hour of highlights with Brian Moore commentating, and BBC pairing this match with coverage of Wales 2-0 home defeat to Scotland.
The game saw Wolverhampton’s John Richards make his one and only international appearance. Martin Chivers opened the scoring on 9 minutes before Dave Clements equalised from the penalty spot. Chivers grabbed the winner 7 minutes from time to put England top of the table before their 3rd meeting with Wales in 6 months.
