BORUSSIA MONCHENGLADBACH 2 LIVERPOOL 0 1973 UEFA Cup Final 2nd Leg Bakelberg Stadium, Monchengladbach 23rd May 1973

Liverpool survived a massive scare to clinch the first European Trophy in the clubs history, holding off a valiant fightback by the German side to prevail 3-2 on aggregate.

ITV had highlights of the game with commentary by Brian Moore the footage of which is below.

Borussia Monchengladbach fought back valiantly from the 3-0 first leg defeat thanks to a double from Jupp Heynckes but Liverpool withstood a fierce onslaught from the Germans in the 2nd half and held on, with Ray Clemence’s penalty save in the first leg proving to be the decisive moment.

With Juventus having seen off Derby County in the semi-finals of the European Cup, this proved to be the last club game involving a British team of the 1972/73 season, although the European Cup Final between Ajax and Juve was shown live on ITV. All that remained was England’s tumultuous tour of Eastern Europe and a turning point in the history of the English game.
